Q is for QR Codes
What is a QR code?
A QR Code is a pattern that can be read with a QR code reader app such as Qrafter or Quick Scan. A photograph, link, document, or video pops up when the reader scans the code depending on what the QR code has been created for.

How can QR codes be used in the classroom?
I recently did a project with QR codes involving creating a two minute book talk video, attaching the video to a QR code, and pasting the QR code onto the specific book in our library. The end result is that students can go into our library, select a book with a QR code on it, scan the code, watch the book talk done by another student, and then decide if they want to read the book! Once we figured out the process for attaching the QR code to the video, we were in business! I would like to do this again with my class now that they know the process because it would be a lot less time consuming and much more effective as a classroom activity.
Scan the QR codes below to see examples of the videos created by my students.

Because QR codes can be attached to a photo, link, or video. They would be very useful and motivating as a scavenger hunt pit stop. The student could scan the code and then get directions about what to do next. It can also be useful at centres - the teacher could make a video of her/himself explaining what to do and the children at that station could scan the code when they are ready to hear the instructions, or if they need to hear them more than once. QR codes could also be used by students as part of a project, where they have to create a product and need to share a resource, link, photo, or video. The possibilities seem endless if you are creative!
Below I have attached photographs of my students creating their two minute book talks using iPads and YouTube Capture. I have also attached the template that they used to prepare their "spiels." Feel free to modify as needed.
